Framed Keys On Burlap {Fun DIY Art}

Three things this gal is currently loving: keys, burlap and gray weathered stain.

And I have proof.... over a year ago I blogged about these Framed Antique Keys

And here I am (again, over a year later) still trying to incorporate more keys into our home decor.

This time I brought my new love of weathered gray stain to make this super easy, super fun and super stylish FRAMED KEYS ART.

Now, most people that display these kind of keys as art have some type of sentimental value attached to each key: first car, first apartment, first house, etc...

But not this girl. I have absolutely no sentimental value to any of these keys...as a matter of fact I have no idea what doors these keys once unlocked.

But the piece as a whole is sentimental. The keys were purchased a few weeks back on our 10 year wedding anniversary while strolling through our favorite antique store in Monterey, Ca.

So this framed keys art will always remind me of that special day we enjoyed together as a family doing absolutely nothing but having fun!

The keys were 50 cents a pop and the frame was an unfinished one I bought from Hobby Lobby with a gift card (gotta love those!)

I didn't even bother to clean the keys since I wanted to keep the character of the worn out metal.

I used Rusteoleum's Weathered Gray stain to lightly stain the frame and then I did a whitewash effect with a lighter gray paint. I then sanded the frame lightly to reveal some of the natural wood tone.

I am in love with this technique!

After the frame was dry, I cut some burlap to size my 5 x 7 frame, hot glued the burlap to the back-piece of the frame and glued my keys on the burlap and it was ready to be hanged!

This is the super easy way I hang frames when I'm all out of sawtooth frame hangers:

Simply apply a glob of hot glue to the back of your frame and while it's still wet dip a slightly bent paper clip in it.

When the glue is all dry, that paper clip aint' going nowhere, darling!

Of course, I wouldn't recommend this for super heavy framework!

I had the perfect spot waiting for this almost free art work above my mantel. I told you there would be some additions in the living room my Living Room Tour for Spring/Summer post!

And every time I walk past it, I can't help but smile...

Here are some pictures from our fun filled trip!

What other sentimental items do you think would be cool to see framed and used as art?

I have another one coming up soon and I'm pretty excited about it!!

Your trip looks super fun! Belated happy 10th aniv Selene! You said the keys weren't sentimental, but they are actually right, a grey souvenir of a great day! I have the keys to our former 2 houses and I plan to frame them someday, thanks for the idea! I framed penny souvenirs in the past also.http://buhayatbahay.blogspot.com/2013/05/displaying-my-penny-souvenirs.html
