DIY Floor to Ceiling Shower Curtain (Quick and Easy Method)

I have a guest bath reveal coming in the near future!

This bathroom has slowly gone under some beautifying since we moved in our home 4 years ago.

The latest change? A new shower curtain.

But a standard shower curtain just wouldn't do.  I had seen the floor to ceiling shower curtains on blogs for sometime now and just knew I had to have one!

Besides bringing a wow factor, the floor to ceiling shower curtain also makes the bathroom appear taller by drawing the eyes upward.

Huge difference, right? Right!

I decided to make one out of canvas drop cloth instead of trying to find one online. That's just how I roll most of the time, you know me.

I purchased a double pack of 6 x 9 drop cloth from Home Depot (which was a total score for the price of 1!) and got to work right away.

How to Make Floor to Ceiling Drop Cloth Shower Curtain

To make a DIY floor-to-ceiling shower curtain, you will need the following materials:

• Fabric - Choose a waterproof fabric like polyester or nylon. The amount of fabric needed depends on the height and width of your shower space. Measure the length from the ceiling to the floor and the width from one end of the shower to the other, then add a few extra inches for hems and seams.
• (Optional) Sewing machine & Thread - You'll need a sewing machine to hem and sew the curtains together. I also have used a no-sewing machine method below, if you don't have sewing skills.
• Grommets & Grommet Tool - You'll need several grommets to hang the shower curtain. The number of grommets depends on the size of your shower space. Also, a grommet tool is needed to insert the grommets into the fabric.
• Shower curtain rings - You'll need shower curtain rings to hang the curtain from the grommets.
• Scissors - You'll need scissors to cut the fabric and trim the threads.
• Measuring tape - You'll need a measuring tape to measure the length and width of your shower space.
• Pins & Iron - You'll need pins to hold the fabric in place while you sew and the iron to press the hems and seams of the fabric.

Step 1: Measure your shower space 

Start by planning and measuring the height and width of your shower space from ceiling to floor and from one end of the shower to the other. Add a few extra inches for hems and seams.

Then, in my case, I had to wash and dry the drop cloth to get rid of the stiffness. It worked like a charm!

Note: After drying, the drop cloth did shrink a bit, but thankfully still covered the area nicely!

Next, I ironed, ironed and ironed all those wrinkles out! This was my least favorite part, of course!

Step 2: Prepare & Cut the Fabric if Needed

If you have bought fabric, you need to cut it to fit your plan. Cut the fabric to fit the measurements you took earlier.

I laid a sheet down to protect my kitchen floor (not that it's worth protecting, the thing needs to be replaced) and laid the drop cloth on top of it.

Then I measured and taped off 3 lines. I decided to go with two very thick ones and one slightly smaller one in the middle.

(Optional) Step 3: Hem & Sew the Fabric

This is an optional step if you are going for the sewing route. I personally will not use sewing, but if you feel comfortable with sewing, here's what you should do:

a) Hem the sides - Fold over the sides of the fabric about 1/2 inch and press with an iron. Then fold the sides over again about 1/2 inch and press again. Pin the hem in place and sew along the edge.

b) Hem the top and bottom - Fold over the top and bottom of the fabric about 1 inch and press with an iron. Then fold the top and bottom over again about 1 inch and press again. Pin the hems in place and sew along the edge.

Step 4: Non-Sew Method

For the non-sew method, here's what I did:

I painted the lines with some white latex paint I had laying around. This part was a little tricky since I wasn't getting even coverage at first. I had to apply 3 coats. No biggie thought, I kept my eye on the prize!

I removed the tape right after finishing my last coat and let the lines dry. The kitchen was off limits for a few hours (I ensured my family they would not die if they didn't eat for 3 hours) until I could move the curtain to what was at that time a spare room.

I also spray painted the shower curtain rod with Krylon's Satin Nickel spray paint. That stuff dried fast! I was able to handle it within 30 minutes of painting! Love it!

The next day, my lovely tall shower curtain was ready to hang. And since I have absolutely no sewing skills whatsoever, I bought these clip rings from Target to just clip on! Problem solved!

Note: I actually returned these for the satin nickel ones after I thought things through.

And this is what I beheld when all the clipping action was finished!

The difference was such a breath of fresh air, let me tell ya!

I'm so glad I went with a few thick stripes instead of thin ones. It keeps things simple but still makes an appropriate impact for this small guest bathroom.

I want to keep things in this bathroom light, fresh and airy so using a drop cloth was perfect for me since it somewhat resembles linen.
