Bookshelf Makeover {An Almost Fail!}

This project was an ALMOST fail..almost.

I decided to paint Lily's cheap ol' $15 bookshelf white so it would look less....well, brown and more cheery.

This bookshelf is used more for  toy storage than book holding. It's also laminate which =  hard to paint since it's a non porous surface!

I did my homework, though. A good sand job, some primer, waiting time for curing and a couple coats of paint should have done the trick.

Except, I didn't follow directions to a T. No big surprise there.

I sanded it, but since the white paint I bought was paint and primer in one I figured I could skip the priming step. BIG MISTAKE!

The parts that I sanded very well (top, outer sides and shelves) allowed the paint adhere very well. However, I apparently did a poor job of sanding ALL of the inside of the bookshelf!

After 5 coats of paint and still seeing bubbles I became frustrated and like an idiot for not following directions or sanding the inside as well as I did the outside of the bookshelf!

After the bubbly paint on the inside dried you could easily peel off the paint...NOOOOOOOO!!!!

I was almost going to throw in the towel when I remembered I still had those paper table runners that Pick Your Plum graciously let me keep after an order mix up.

It was a light bulb moment: line the inside of the bookshelf with the stylish chevron striped paper! Genius!

So my friends, I'm happy to report this story has a happy {and gorgeous} ending!

Take a look for yourself:

Isn't the paper so pretty? I'm just glad it covers up all the peeling action that's going on underneath it!

It's so pretty, I almost didn't want to put Lily's storage baskets back in there...

but I had to.

I also painted the very bottom of the bookshelf an aqua blue with some craft this little detail!

It's been a week and so far so good! The paint on the shelves hasn't scratched off from Lily pulling her wicker baskets in and out! That's a good sign!

You can see how I made those cute little labels here and the technique I used to make the bin you see on the second shelf here. Both are very easy and frugal!

Like you, I never follow directions to a 'T'. But then always end up with a near disaster! The bookcase looks awesome. Great save!
