Makeup De-Cluttering And Re-Organization

Hi everyone! Today I'm going to share with you how I downsized and re-organized my makeup stash to make it work more efficiently for me.

This is the vanity (full of makeup that manages to get messy and fuller over and over again) that I've sat to "paint my face" for over 5 years. As you can see, it has seen better days; there's a knob missing and if you could see it in person you'd take note of the makeup stains smeared all over it.

When I first got it, the drawer was the only makeup storage I needed....but as the years went by and my makeup obsession grew, I went through different sized makeup train cases. When those were no longer big enough to accommodate my growing addiction, I got the 3 drawer storage unit you see resting on top of the vanity.

I realize this is nowhere near as much makeup as some beauty addicts have. But for me personally, it was starting to get a little ridiculous. Everyone has different limits. Mine came down to this: I wasn't using all of the products, they were just taking up space, some were old, some didn't work out for me....so why in the world  were they still in my possession???

It was obviously time to trash the products I wasn't loving (I've done this at least 5 times in the last 3 years so I know how to let go by now) and re-organizing the one's that were keepers.

First, let's take a look at each section to see what I was working with here...

The drawer was semi-organizing some eyeshadows (left), eyeliners, mascaras, primers (right) and face powders and a foundation (under right black bin)

On my vanity sat some of my brushes (my main set sits on top of the 3 drawer unit in a brush roll), and an acrylic organizer with lip glosses, more brushes, my foundation, some sprays, and other random things:

The first drawer of the organizing unit holds all my eyeshadow palettes:

The second drawer holds my lipsticks, more lip glosses, lip stains and 2 lipstick palettes:

Finally, the third holds blushes, a bronzer, a blush palette, a concealer palette, a couple highlighters and my eyelash curler (which reminds me I have to look into getting a new one! Any recommendations?)

These are the rejects that ended up in the trash: Some lip glosses, eyeliners, eyeshadows, the concealer palette, both lipstick palettes, an eyeshadow palette, some false lashes, a brush, a couple lipsticks and all my lipstains.

Once the burden of unused/unloved products was lifted I was able to fit everything that used to be in the drawer inside the 3 drawer bin...so that got me to re-thinking my makeup area. Did I still need/want to use the vanity? Could this little corner in our room be used differently?

I finally decided that I didn't want to sit at my vanity to do my makeup any longer. I sit enough as it is when I blog, and that corner could be turned into a little reading nook in the future.
I recruited my hubby to change the ugly fluorescent lighting in our bathroom (future post) so I could happily "paint the barn" in there.

My makeup is now stored under my side of the sink and I couldn't be happier with the extra space in our room!

Here is how the drawers look now:
First drawer- all palettes and a face powder

Second drawer: eyeshadows, mascaras, eyeliners, eye primers, and eyelash curler

Third drawer: lipsticks in the back, blushes in the front and a few other items to the right

I must say, the only thing I do miss about my vanity, is my daughter sitting on my lap as I do my makeup...it was one of her favorite things to do. You can see evidence of that in my One Brush Eye Look post.

But it was definitely time for a change and I can always make more memories of her sitting on my lap in our new future reading nook!

Happy makeup trashing, de-cluttering and organizing!!!

Will be linking to the these awesome linky parties:

You are doing okay. I have lots of shoe boxes and drawers. All of it inside a large computer desk with shelves. Next to it is a large three drawer bin with stuff. And on top is stuff. I have a ton of stuff. Seriously. I have over 1000 lipsticks alone and thousands of eye shadows. What is nice is that eye shadows last forever.

I am marching out to get those storage drawers... I never realized I badly need one. No wonder hubahubster is complaining too much about my makeup cluttering all over the house. Great idea! Thanks for sharing!

Hi Hanzy! I got it from Target a few years back, but you can probably google them or check out ebay or amazon. I've seen them there too.

I use very little makeup but what a difference your organization makes. Less time trying to find what you want and more time to beautify
